The Postulant’s Journey — Day 618

One video today — Session 11 on the Sacrament of Baptism. One video left in the course. Then finish the required reading.

The lecture covered baptism and circumcision as covenant signs. Covenantally speaking, baptism replaces circumcision by virtue of Christ’s command. The sign changes; the meaning cannot. The Lord promises to circumcise the heart. Paul tells the Colossians that in Christ they are also circumcised. The sign given to the body in the Old Covenant becomes the sign given in water in the New.

The argument for sprinkling as the original mode comes from Pentecost — 3,000 baptized in a single day in Jerusalem, by the same method Moses used at Sinai when he sprinkled the blood of the covenant on the people. Water is a symbolical cleansing agent just as much as it is an actual cleansing agent.

Tomorrow: the last video, then finish the reading.
